Why do we cleanse our stones and crystals at Zoe and Piper?

July 08, 2014

“I’m going to go sun my rocks” is a phrase you may hear me say around the office. Why? Because stones absorb and hold energies, and sometimes they need to be cleaned. When I go to the Tucson Gem Show each year, I get overwhelmed from the energy that is present at each venue - it is like nothing I have ever experienced before. That alone was good reason to cleanse all the gemstones before bringing them in to the studio.

Crystals need to be cleansed for various reasons. Crystals absorb energy from the environment and people. I cleanse all my gemstones as soon as I receive them, to dispurse any excess energy they may have accumulated. Since I’m in sunny Arizona, I prefer cleansing crystals in the sunlight. Please note: Take care if sunning quartz crystal, especially spheres, as they focus the sun’s rays and can be a fire hazard.

There are several other cleansing methods for crystals, but you must be sure that whatever method you choose won’t harm your particular crystal. Running water, sea water, moonlight and incense (or smudging) are a few.

The beautiful gemstones in this photo are just waiting to be made into new jewelry. Apatite, tourmaline and sapphires, oh my!
I referenced The Crystal Healer by Philip Permutt, if you are looking for a book that covers crystals, chakras, healing techniques and general information, I recommend this one.
